Catalán Modernism Barcelona Architecture Lluis Domenech i Muntaner
Catalán Modernism is the Spanish version of what you might know as Art Nouveau (also very well known as Jugendstile, meaning “youth style”, which is derived from the German magazine “Jugend” that promoted it so heavily). Barcelona is full of beautiful Modernisme buildings created by a plethora of Catalán Modernist architects, Antonio Gaudí being the most famous. In this second edition on Catalán Modernism & Barcelona Architecture we take a look at another very famous player, Lluis Domenech i Muntaner. He has several works that were honoured by UNESCO as being world heritage sites. He trained Josep Puig i Cadalfach, dedicated much of his time to Catalán politics (Modernisme has very deep roots in Catalán Nationalism), and was a writer before deciding to drop it all and delve into the world of architecture. About fifteen years ago there were hardly any sushi restaurants in Barcelona. The few ones that were around were owned and managed primarily by Japanese people.
